We all have those days when nothing seems to be going right and nothing sounds more appealing than hiding under the duvet all day long. Some days do call for a restful duvet day though and they work a treat, but let’s face it, it’s not very often that we can indulge ourselves with one of those. When time or budget isn’t on our side to allow us to go to a spa or on a mega shopping trip when we’re feeling down in the dumps to help cheer us up there are some really quick and cheap ways to help give our moods an instant boost.
Not all these ideas that sometimes help me are going to work for everyone and there are times when a duvet day is the best medicine to soothe our sorrows. If you are in a bit of a funk and want to snap out of it fast, here are some fast and effective ideas that can be instant mood changers.
1. Put on your favourite lipstick
I always feel great after making a bit of an effort with my appearance and find that it really makes a difference to how I feel. Whether it’s putting on a new scarf, shoes or lipstick, wear it with pride and own it!
2. Connect with friends
Whether you love or hate technology, it’s the fastest and easiest way to connect with your loved ones. Making with those dearest to you is an easy mood booster, especially when you start discussing upcoming events or start laughing over old memories.
3. Get some fresh air
Going outside and taking a break from it all is a wonderful way to clear your mind, especially during a work day. Taking a breather from whatever has put a grey cloud over your head will hopefully help perk you up and turn your attention to other brighter happier things.
4. Make yourself a cup of tea
We’re obsessed with our tea in the UK and when there is a moment of crisis the first port of call is the trusty kettle. Drinking something like green tea will help you feel more alert or if tea isn’t your jam you could try a cup of coffee or a comforting mug of hot chocolate instead.
5. Make a ‘love list’
A really simple way to perk up your mood when you’re feeling down is making a list of things that you love. Being reminded of the things that make you happy is a sure way to put a smile on your face.
6. Spoil yourself
Your bank balance may not forgive you, but there is something instantaneously happy about treating yourself to something off your mega wishlist. As part of my ‘get organised’ theme for August I’ve just spoilt myself with a gorgeous life planner, something that I’ve wanted to buy for ages and I can’t wait for it arrive!
7. Look over your favourite photographs
It’s that thing again of being reminded of happier times from the past. Looking back at old memories and experiences that filled your heart with laughter is a really effective way to make you feel great.
8. Play your favourite tunes
I don’t know about you, but listening to my favourite tracks always brings a smile to my face and if it has a good beat, you will often find me dancing around my kitchen sporting my best air guitar…not to be ever seen in public!
9. Eat some chocolate
The antioxidants found in dark chocolate have been in the news recently for the positive impact that they can have on your health, but chocolate is also great for your mood too. Dark chocolate stimulates the release of serotonin in the brain, the body’s natural happy pill.
10. Laugh for the sheer hell of it
They do say that ‘laughter is the best medicine’, it’s something that you can do anywhere and is an immediate mood changer.
When I’m feeling down in the dumps I like to try some of these ideas out. The ones that work best for me are being reminded of happy memories by looking at old photographs on my phone, connecting with friends and family or writing a love list. Sure a spa day or a break away would definitely get me out of a funk, but I think my bank balance would appreciate these more budget friendly mood boosters.
